Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle, focused therapeutic approach that uses hypnosis to help create positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

During hypnosis, your attention becomes focused and your mind more receptive to new ways of thinking and responding. In this relaxed state, my voice will guide you. Together, we will work through challenges, overcome barriers and reset the programs running in your mind, such as anxiety, fears, phobias, low confidence, stress, unwanted habits and more.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Most people describe hypnosis as feeling deeply relaxed, calm and focused.

Although you remain aware of your surroundings and can hear everything that is being said, you will feel physically and mentally relaxed.

People often feel absorbed in the experience, similar to becoming immersed in a good book or film. Everyone experiences hypnosis slightly differently, and there is no 'right' way to feel, but the intention is that you will be calm and comfortable,

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree, provided they are willing to participate and are open to the process.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention that most of us experience regularly in everyday life. We can all daydream, becoming absorbed in a book or a film, and completely lose track of time whilst concentrating on something. These are all states of hypnosis.

Will I lose control?

No.

One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnosis is that you lose control or become unconscious. In reality, you remain aware throughout the session and cannot be made to do anything against your wishes or values.

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. You are always in control and can stop the session at any time.

Will you make me cluck like a chicken?!

Absolutely not!

It is important to note that 'Stage Hypnosis' and the hypnosis of a hypnotherapy session are two very different things.

Stage hypnotists are entertainers who work with willing volunteers in a performance setting. Hypnotherapy is a professional therapeutic practice focused on helping people create positive change.

You will never be asked to do anything against your wishes.

Will hypnotherapy work for me?

No ethical hypnotherapist can guarantee results with absolute certainty.

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative experience that can be highly effective when the client is motivated, engaged and ready to make change. My role is to create the conditions that support that change, using techniques tailored specifically to your needs and goals.

What happens during my initial consultation?

The first meeting is designed to help us get to know one another and understand what you would like to achieve.

We will discuss your goals, experiences and any challenges you are facing. I will explain how hypnotherapy works, answer any questions you may have and begin designing an approach tailored specifically to you.

There is no pressure, no judgement and no expectation to share anything you are uncomfortable discussing.

Only when you are ready will we book you in for your hypnotherapy session.

What happens during my Hypnotherapy session?

During a hypnotherapy session we will start by sitting you comfortably and revisiting your goals for the session. You will not be lying down.

I will then lead you gently into a state of relaxation, shifting your focus inside yourself, to your inner world with my voice with you as your guide.

I will deepen your relaxation in stages, in a way that will feel very natural to you.

When we are ready, I will lead you through the change work to help you achieve your goals. There are a number of techniques we can do here.

I will then softly return you to waking consciousness.

I will always talk you through the steps I have tailored for you beforehand, so that you know what to expect and can relax into the process.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals and individual circumstances.

Some people experience significant changes after just one session, while others benefit from a longer programme of support. During our initial consultation, we will discuss your goals and agree on the most appropriate approach for you.

Do you use scripts?

No.

I always say, a hypnotherapist using a script is like a hairdresser cutting everyone's hair into the same style - you'll get your hair done, sure, but does it suit you?!

At Highfield Plains, every session is designed specifically for the individual sitting in front of me. Rather than reading from a pre-written script, I tailor each session to your goals, your personal experiences and your own natural patterns of thinking and responding.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

When delivered by a trained professional, hypnotherapy is widely considered a safe and gentle complimentary therapy.

If you have a diagnosed mental health condition, neurological condition or are receiving medical treatment, please let me know before your session so that we can discuss whether hypnotherapy is appropriate and how best to work alongside any existing support.

Can hypnotherapy help children?

Absolutely!

Hypnotherapy for children typically uses guided imagery to engage a child's natural imagination.

It is important to note that the child must participate valuntarily. If a child does not want to engage in the process, hypnotherapy will not be effective.

For all child bookings, a parent or guardian must be present. I may ask you to bring something to read or listen to, so that you are not taken into a hypnotic state by listening to my voice.

Can hypnotherapy replace medical treatment?

No.

Hypnotherapy should not be considered a replacement for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. If you have concerns about your physical or mental health, you should always consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Hypnotherapy often works alongside other forms of support as part of a wider wellbeing approach.
